Pranayama – Breathing Exercises:

Breathing creates and sustains your vital energy. It is one of the few autonomic functions of the body that we can influence. Vital energy can be constricted through poor breathing habits. Poor posture, weak or tight respiratory muscles leads to poor breathing.  A poor breather breathes too shallow and high in the chest; they can hyperventilate, breathe through the mouth or hold the breath. The benefits of proper breathing habits are many.

  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Calms and steadies the mind.
  • Reduces stress and improves concentration.
  • Alleviates chronic pain conditions, hypertension, asthma, coronary heart disease.
  • Brings you fully into the present.
  • The breath is an important link to greater health and wellbeing

In that one fabulous hour of Lisa’s Yoga class, my mind calms down through breathing and my body enjoys the wonderful long stretches. A year ago I began taking Pilates and because of Lisa’s extensive knowledge my posture has greatly improved and I better understand how to properly use muscle groups to their full benefit.
